The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) is partnering with the multinational utility corporation Engie on a partnership to improve carbon capture in the emirates. Along its coastline, Abu Dhabi has miles of mangroves, which form a significant part of coastal habitats and help protect land from floods.

In December, Distant Imagery aims to plant at least 4,000 mangrove seeds using its self-engineered drones. To assess the project and the amount of carbon it collects, the company will then proceed to track the rehabilitated region.

“We are very pleased to be rehabilitating mangroves using drone technology in this world-first project. Using the latest technology in our environmental endeavors are core to what we do.
Similarly, we are consistently propagating different species and the Blue Carbon Project is another example of that,” said Ahmed Al Hashmi — Acting Executive Director for Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity at Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi.

Engie Middle East, South & Central Asia and Turkey (MESCAT) EVP, Policy, Communications & ESR Florence Fontani said: “Providing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions to deliver power, water and services is at the core of Engie’s goal.” The Blue Carbon initiative is completely in line with our pledge, hand-in-hand with our local allies, to resolve environmental concerns.
